These are just some news stories that I have come across only involving people who could legally carry guns.  It is not meant to be comprehensive of all the news stories over that month and certainly not meant to be comprehensive list of cases as most cases are unlikely to get media coverage.  As it is, most of these stories  were only covered in one news outlet.

Hammond, Indiana (NWI.com), June 24, 2016:

A 25-year-old Hammond man told police he was driving east on 169th Street when a man in a dark Chrysler vehicle opened fire on them, Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

The man’s 24-year-old girlfriend and their two children were in his vehicle, police said. No one was struck by the gunfire.

The man told police he returned fire with his handgun because he feared for his safety, Hoyda said. . . .

Duluth, Georgia (WXIA, Channel 11 NBC), June 23, 2016:

A husband is dead after defending himself and his wife from an armed robber, according to police.

The deadly shootout happened outside the Time Internet Café on Steve Reynolds Boulevard near Gwinnett Place Mall just before midnight.

The owners of the café were locking up when police say they were approached by a 22-year-old Diante Doby of Stone Mountain. He was armed with a pistol and wearing a white mask and dark hoodie, according to police. . . .

Evansville, Indiana (WFIE, Channel 14 NBC), June 23, 2016:

When the victim told Hancock he didn’t have any money, police say Hancock fired a shot at him. Police say the victim shot back and Hancock took off in a car.

We’re told a car matching the description was stopped at Washington and Kentucky. Police say Hancock was driving. . . .

New Orleans (WDSU Channel 6 NBC), June 21 2016:

A would-be robber fled after the man he was attempting to rob showed he was armed, New Orleans police said.

The attempted robbery was reported about 10:24 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Acacia Street.

Police said a 44-year-old man was in his vehicle when he was approached by a man he didn’t know.

“The male put his hand underneath his shirt, implying he had a weapon and told the victim to give it up,” police said in a preliminary report.

The victim reached into his glove compartment, where he had a gun, and the robber fled, police said. . . .

Baton Rouge, LA (KSLA Channel 12), June 14, 2016:

Police say a teen robbery suspect thought a man carrying a purse was an easy target, but soon learned that the victim was carrying a weapon of his own.

“The victim reached down into his purse and pulled out a gun,” notes the arresting officer in the probable cause report. “The victim fired one shot into the left leg of the defendant.”  . . .

After being treated for his injury, Sherman was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He is charged with attempted armed robbery and attempted first-degree murder.

Queens, New York, June 13, 2016:

According to police, the unidentified man had entered the bar armed with a firearm and began taking money out of a cash register.

The suspect then attempted to rob the customers at the establishment, however a 69-year-old patron — who was later identified as a retired NYPD officer — pulled out his gun and shot the man once in the head, according to NY1. . . .

Los Angeles, California (KABC Channel 7), June 8, 2016:

A stranger stabbed a woman in a secured underground parking garage in Koreatown, according to police. Then authorities said the woman’s boyfriend shot and killed the attacker. . . .

Officials said a woman who was in a secured underground parking garage was attacked by a stranger, suffering a stab wound.

Police stated the man was hiding behind a car and waited for the woman before attacking her.

The woman’s boyfriend then shot and killed the man, according to police. . . . .

Beaumont, Texas (The News), June 3, 2016:

A concealed handgun licensed carrier shot and injured one of two men trying to rob him at gunpoint in Beaumont Thursday night. . . .

The intended robbery victim told police he was confronted by two men, one was wearing a bandana covering his face and armed with a handgun while the other suspect was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt.

The victim fired several rounds at the suspect and the second suspect took off running. The investigation is ongoing. . . .

Levittown, PA (WPVI, Channel 6 ABC), June 3, 2016:

Kenneth Lee “had no choice to do what he did. He was protecting himself” . . . .

District Attorney David Heckler wholeheartedly agreed.

“There is no thought that we would prosecute the shooter in this case. He was entirely justified in his conduct, and frankly should be commended,” Heckler said.

“From what I can see, he performed a public service in taking out this fella,” Heckler continued. “The fella asked for what he got and he got it.” . . .

Police say the armed man, who was wearing a Halloween mask, got out of the passenger’s seat of a minivan – leaving the driver in the vehicle – and headed into the store. He tried to mask his gun with an umbrella, but the owner was ready. . . .

Sources say it appears the robbers intended to clear out the pharmacy. The dead man had zip ties by his body, so it appears he was going to tie up the pharmacy owner. . . .

Littlerock, Arkansas (Arkansas Online), June 1, 2016:

Tiffany Williamson, 34, told police she was sitting in her car playing with her dog when a man approached the front of her vehicle. The man pointed a black semi-automatic handgun and said, “Give me all you got,” she told police. Williamson, who works as an armed guard, told police that she grabbed her gun beside her seat and fired one shot through the windshield at the man. . . .

Gainesville, Texas (KXII, Channel 12), June 1, 2016:

A Gainesville man had tens of thousands dollars worth of electrical equipment stolen on Monday. . . .

More than $20,000 of equipment gone. But after going for a drive to clear his head, he circled back home and made a discovery, just next door.

“The victim had seen three suspects who were carrying some of his property, some of his tool bags,” said Gainesville Police Chief Kevin Phillips. . . .

Electrician Brian Jackson noticed three men with his tool bags near his home. He then pulled out a gun holding them there until police arrived. . . .

Houston (Daily Mail), May 30, 2016:

25-year-old Army veteran allegedly suffering from PTSD has been identified as the suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting in Houston. . . .

Reports suggest he went on a rampage with a high-powered AR15 rifle and shot at bystanders before police gunned him down.

Pictures from the scene also show police patrol cars riddled with bullet holes.

He killed 56-year-old Eugene Linscomb and critically injured father Byron Wilson, who police say was trying to fight back and stop the deadly attack.

Authorities said Wilson had a concealed carry permit and fired at the suspect. He was shot three times in the process.

He is expected to survive. . . .

This story occurred during the beginning of May, but it wasn’t reported until the end of the month and it was a particularly bizarre case so we decided to include it.

New Britain, CT (New Britain Herald), May 31, 2016:

A local man is free on bond after his arrest Friday on charges he pulled out a chainsaw and shouted racial slurs during a road rage incident in Farmington on May 6.

Michael Salafia, 30, of 64 Whitewood Drive, allegedly got out of his car with a chainsaw while at a red light and approached another driver, Farmington police said. As Salafia was advancing on the other driver, who was a black male, Salafia started the chainsaw and began yelling racial slurs, reports said.

The other pulled out a gun, which he was carrying legally, police said, to stop Salafia from getting closer. Salafia left but not before accidentally cutting himself with the chainsaw which splattered blood on the other man’s car. The other man was not charged in the incident, police said. . . .

    Thirteen DOCUMENTED DGU’s.

Any estimate on how many UNdocumented DGU’s in the same time frame?
