Newest Fox News piece: “1 year after Newtown, support for stricter gun control has disappeared”

A New op-ed piece by John Lott starts this way:

President Obama has pushed hard for gun control this year and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent millions of dollars on ads, but the administration’s promise to coordinate “a November lobbying effort and plan events to commemorate the first anniversary of the Newtown, Connecticut” has gotten little traction.

Problems with Public Health Research: Michael Siegel, Craig Ross, and Charles King, “The Relationship Between Gun Ownership and Firearm Homicide Rates in the United States, 1981-2010,” American Journal of Public Health

In a recent issue of the American Journal of Public Health, three researchers examine the relationship between “gun ownership” as measured by the percent of suicides committed with firearms.  There is a significant literature indicating that this measure actually is picking up the relationship between demographic variables and firearm homicides as how people commit suicide varies appreciably with demographic characteristics (gender, age, race, etc.).  …

Problems with Public Health Research: Garen J. Wintemute, “Findings from the Firearms Licensee Survey,” Journal of Urban Health

The quality of research published in medical journals on public health is abysmal. The CPRC will occasionally publish comments on this research.

In this case, the full title of the paper by Garen J. Wintemute is “Support for a Comprehensive Background Check Requirement and Expanded Denial Criteria
for Firearm Transfers: Findings from the Firearms Licensee Survey.” A copies of the article is available here and here and the abstract is as follows:

ABSTRACT Federal and state policies on eligibility to purchase and possess firearms and background check requirements for firearm transfers are undergoing intensive review and, in some cases, modification.

CNN Poll Support Gun Control

Polls consistently show that over the last couple decades more people are opposing more gun control

The most recent CNN poll shows more people ever recorded opposing more gun control (UPDATED CNN poll). From CNN, 52% of Americans oppose stricter gun control. The previous high opposition was 55% in September 2014. The average opposition since 1989 was 40%, so the current opposition is 12% higher than the average.…

Opinion piece at Fox News: “NFL hypocrisy — Bloomberg anti-gun ads ok but ad about ‘protection’ is banned?”

The piece by the Crime Prevention Research Center starts this way:

New York City Mayor and gun control advocate Michael Bloomberg sure knows how to get his way.

This week the NFL, after featuring anti-gun ads during the last two Super Bowls, it decided that an ad offering the opposite point of view in the upcoming Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2 was just too much.

. . . But at least one prominent gun and crime researcher says he thinks that the OFA campaign is misleading.

“Obviously background checks wouldn’t have stopped Newtown,” John Lott Jr., president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

CNN January 2016 Gun Ownership Poll

Problems with using the General Social Survey to measure gun ownership

UPDATE: In addition to the ABC News/Washington Post and Gallup polls indicating that gun ownership rates are above 40%, similar results are obtained from CNN poll conducted on January 5-6, 2016 that finds 40% live in a household owning a gun with 9% unwilling to state an opinion, implying that the true rate is above 40%.
