CPRC making a difference in the debate over the Fort Hood Mass Public Shooting

John Lott’s op-ed on the shooting at Fox News starts this way:

The Obama administration hasn’t learned anything from the massacres at Fort Hood in 2009 or the Washington Navy Yard last year.

For all my research on how to stop or prevent mass public shootings and all the victims at these attacks that I have talked to over the years, the attack this week at Fort Hood was different.

A personal note about the Ft Hood shooting today: When family are near the attack

Personal note from John Lott:

With all the people who I have talked to who have been present at mass public shootings over the 16 years since I first wrote about gun-free zones in the Wall Street Journal, this attack at Fort Hood was different: my second oldest son, Ryan, is stationed on the base and was a couple of blocks away from the attack.

Concealed Carry in places that serve alcohol

New York Times Claim: “a handful of mostly Southern states that allow people with permits to take concealed guns into bars and restaurants” that serve alcohol

The figure is from opencarry.org.

Playing the typical hypothetical possibility angle, the New York Times story quotes one worried restaurant owner saying:

“On some nights you have college kids wall to wall in here drinking,” he said. “You don’t want a gun in here.”

No actual instances are mentioned where this fear has materialized.…

Homicide rates across all countries

Comparing murder rates and gun ownership across countries

Charles Blow in the New York Times last year made the very common argument: “America has the highest gun homicide rate, the highest number of guns per capita . . . .”  In another story, the New York Times quotes researcher David Hemenway as claiming: “Generally, if you live in a civilized society, more guns mean more death.”  CNN’s Piers Morgan believes: “America has the worst incidents of gun murders of any of what they call the civilized world.”  Bloomberg’s Businessweek also made similar claims this spring.  …

Errors in Piers Morgan last speech on guns at the end of his show on CNN

Below is the relevant text of Piers Morgan’s comments. Here a few comments.

1) Doesn’t Piers recognize the irony that the Aurora movie theater and Newtown shootings both occurred where guns are banned? That the movie theater shooting occurred in the one movie theater out of seven showing the Batman movie near where the killer lived?…

Do people feel safer if they own guns in the home?

Despite the constant onslaught exaggerating the risks of guns in the home (see also here), YouGov has a new survey finding that “42% of Americans would feel safer with a gun in the house, while 20% would feel less safe.” And it turns out that they have good reason for feeling that way (see here and here).…

Remembering Piers Morgan as his show is canceled

On the eve of Piers’ last show, here are some videos and commentary that will give people a flavor of the type of show that he had. It is too bad that his show has been canceled. In many ways, Piers unintentionally helped out those who opposed gun control.

Piers’ reliance on Mother Jones as a source for statistics in this second video is discussed here.…

Idaho becomes 9th state to mandate that people with permitted concealed handguns can have guns on college campuses

Idaho now joins seven other states that to varying degrees allow permitted concealed handguns on college campuses. As I note below, if you include Pennsylvania, it is probably more correct to say that Idaho becomes the ninth state. On March 12th, Idaho governor Butch Otter signed a bill that will allow those with an enhanced concealed handgun permits to carry guns on college campuses after July 1st this year.…
