All 191 House Democrats voted to keep Social Security Regulations that ban guns for those who need help with their finances

Feb 2, 2017 | Featured

Have you ever thought of letting someone else manage your finances? Under finalized new rules released just before Christmas by President Obama, Social Security recipients will be banned from buying a gun if they are deemed “financially incompetent.” Some 4.2 million Social Security recipients — about 10 percent of all people 65 and older — could lose the right to own a gun as a result.

Just because someone can’t manage his finances doesn’t mean that he’s a danger to others. What is next? Keeping guns away from people who can’t drive or do math? What about other rights? Should “financially incompetent” people be forbidden from voting or making other decisions?

For those interested, you can see the text of the resolution and the votes of each congressman available here.

Perhaps I misunderstand the purpose of our political system, especially in the House of Representatives. I thought that our communities elected representatives that held similar social, legal and moral norms of our community and that they were to introduce, debate and vote on the issues after contemplative thought as to best represent us, not a group think ideologue who serves only themselves and the social agenda of an abstract party platform. Even if we acknowledge surrender to party politics, what happened to the oath to support and defend the Constitution of The United States of America? Is there something about the second amendment that says “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED” that is somehow ambiguous to these alleged educated leaders? You can not conflate having a fiduciary representative with being non compis mentas, or an adjudication of posing a threat to yourself or others. I have been taking care of my mother’s bills, taxes and other financial responsibilities for five to six years but I didn’t remove her .357 Smith & Wesson until her Alzheimer’s diagnosed about three years ago made it irresponsible for her to be armed.

The senior citizens of this nation are not in the news on a near regular basis for being involved in gun related incidents. They have been in the news however, for being assaulted on public transportation, dragged out of their vehicles for voting a certain way, mugged as they walk in parks or on city sidewalks, beaten in elevators, assaulted in entryways of their homes and even punched in the face and knocked out cold in grocery store check out lines. Why is our government making the elderly targets in society and their own homes?
As a cancer patient having undergone 15 surgeries in 4 years I asked my daughter or friends to temporarily assist me with some personal matters, strictly because of how physically tired and overwhelmed I became. This law can be dangerously abused and leave some of America’s strongest, most stable minded citizens at risk.

I don’t think you have to worry about your gun rights. This regulation applies to only those who were assigned a 3rd party payee by the SSA or some other authorized organization. A private agreement between you and children would not apply.

Thanks, William, but no, my mom who has given my sister power of attorney to handle her finances would be one of those who are covered. The LA Times reported that 4.2 million people who would be covered. In any case, people’s inability to handle their finances has no clear or obvious bearing on a person’s ability to defend themselves.
